Cambodia's capital is a bustling riverside city packed full of charm and faded French-colonial elegance. Wander around the Royal Palace, marvel at the glittering Silver Pagoda, delve deeper into the recent atrocities at the National Museum then escape the traffic at Wat Phnom.
Hunt for treasure at the colourful Russian Market then try a bowl of steaming kyteow at the eclectic art deco designed Central Market. After a sobering visit to the Toul Sleng Museum jump on a flight to Siem Reap, a vibrant riverside town and home to Cambodia's most famous sight - the temples of Agkor.
Explore the extraordinary temples of Angkor, from the jungle-clad Ta Prohm to the intricately carved Banteay Srei, and the jaw-dropping Angkor Wat. Built between the 9th and 13th centuries when the Khmer empire dominated South-East Asia, the temples are believed to represent the cosmic world and were set in perfect balance, symmetry and composition. With plenty of time to take in all the sights that make up this astounding complex, explore the history and mythology of the Angkor empire while strolling among its maze of impressive temples and ruins. Hindu epics come to life in the sandstone bas-reliefs of Angkor Wat and the intricate detailing of Banteay Srei will delight.
Stay a bit longer to take in the many sights of this lively town. Hire bikes to explore the picturesque countryside, shop for handicrafts at the Psar Chaa market or pick up a unique carving from the workshops of Artisans d'Angkor.
