Travel out from Omalos to get a taste of western Crete. Explore the colourful market of Chania and mingle with locals by the lively waterfront. Begin the hike through orange and olive groves, forests of cypress and pine, and fields of wildflowers. Pass scattered ruins of Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish civilisations and rest in foothill villages, where the essence of Cretan culture and tradition is most evident.
Embark on a hike along the full 18 km length of the dramatic Samaria Gorge. Enjoy an interlude at the deserted village of Samaria - the perfect place for an afternoon picnic. Pursue the final leg of the walk along the narrowing gorge and through the Iron Gates to emerge at Agia Roumeli.
Walk a magnificent coastal route along pebbled beaches and through fragrant woodlands. Pay a visit to the seaside church of Agios Pavlos where, legend has it, St Paul landed on his voyage to Rome. Press on over a rocky hillside and descend to the oasis-like Marble Beach. Take a break before completing the day's journey to Loutro.
Follow a coastal path eastwards before turning inland to climb a dramatic escarpment. Rest at the top and admire the incredible coastal panorama. Walk further across a stony plateau then through pine forest to Aradaina, a deserted village perched on the edge of a cavernous gorge. Reach Anapolis by mid-afternoon and relax in its traditional village square.
Travel to the town of Komitades via Skafion. Traverse the gorge to Imbros village and celebrate the end of the adventure at the local taverna.
