From the window of a light aircraft the enormous Okavango Delta appears as a tangle of deep blue channels cutting curved swathes through the emerald-green landscape. With a remarkable number of animals venturing into the delta to drink, this incredibly watery wilderness offers some of the best wildlife spotting opportunities on the continent. Spend the next few days at a comfortable lodge along the Maunchira River - the perfect place to experience this spectacular site.
Set off on explorations through the delta's wetlands. Take guided walks, power boat safaris and, if water levels are high enough, forays into the tangled channels in a mokoro. These traditional dugout canoes are pole-propelled from a standing position - don't be fooled, they are incredibly stable - and are one of the best ways to explore the area. The park encloses dry woodlands and savannah, papyrus-fringed lagoons and lush islands. This extraordinary range of terrain is ideal for animal sightings, so try and spot half-submerged hippos, sunbaking crocodiles and long-toed lily trotters in the delta's waters.
There might be time for one last safari before bidding goodbye to the delta. This idyllic trip ends in Maun, a busy market town where tribespeople come to trade their cattle. Extremely tourist friendly, Maun is well-worth exploring, so why not relax after this wonderful watery expedition. Those with a few spare days should visit the nearby Tsodilo Hills - an important spiritual site for the local San people
