Dominated by Mt Schafberg, the glassy waters of Wolfgangsee are great for swimming or can be enjoyed with a stroll along the lakeshore promenade. Take in the fresh mountain air, grab a delicious Austrian pastry and enjoy the friendliness of the local people.
From St Gilgen, follow the medieval pilgrimage path to the ornate 14th-century Pilgrimage Church. Hike winding trails or ride the old cogwheel railway to Mt Schafberg for superb views over the Salzkammergut lake district. Descend to St Wolfgang and perhaps visit the iconic Hotel Weisses Rossl.
Travel towards the idyllic lake Nussensee before approaching Bad Ischl, formerly the summer residence of Austrian emperor Franz Joseph. Explore the kitsch Kaiservilla or indulge in a slice of Ischler torte in one of the old-fashioned coffee houses. Bad Ischl is famous for its remedial spas - so perhaps soothe those tired leg muscles in its salty waters.
Follow the Traun river through alpine meadows and past century-old salt and iron mines. Take time to relax beside picturesque waterfalls and enjoy views over grazing cattle. Alternatively, detour via the summit of Mt Katrin for stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Descend to Bad Goisern, home of the goiserer - the typical Austrian hiking boot.
Walk along the century-old salt pipeline, a wooden canal where the waters from the Hallstatt salt mines ran down to Bad Ischl and further to Ebensee, where the precious 'white gold' was cooked. Approach Hallstatt from above and stop by the macabre Beinhaus on the way down. Visit the world's largest ice caves or just relax and enjoy the tranquility of the Austrian mountains.
