Activities include treks of 3 to 4 hours per day in hilly terrain, flat water kayaking or a long day's bike ride, in conditions which are likely to be hot and muggy. You will raise your heart rate on these trips, so a basic level of aerobic fitness is required.

Expect to rough it every now and again, whether it's very simple group-share accommodation at a homestay, a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, the odd cold shower or an encounter with a squat toilet.

Set among windswept plains, stroll the wide streets and lovely plazas of Punta Arenas, taking in the elaborate mansions dating from the late 19th century and maybe pop into one of the interesting museums. This is our gateway to Southern Patagonia; before we head off, try the local seafood - some of the finest in the country.

Sitting right at the end of South America is the awe-inspiring natural wonder of Chilean Patagonia, a wilderness of beautiful and sometimes harsh terrain. See granite pillars, deep lakes, smoking volcanoes, high mountain peaks and icy glaciers. Wonder at how anyone ever reached this remote and remarkable area. This is magnificent trekking country, alive with wildlife and amazing views at every turn. Keep an eye turned to the sky and see nandues, condors and pink flamingoes, and one on the ground for foxes, cougars, guancos and the South Andean deer. Watch the sky change shape and colour across the endless horizon. Hike to the Towers of Paine, the park's most famous site, that make a sudden appearance on the windswept plains. Depending on the time of year, there will also be an excursion across Lake Pehoe, or an extra hike to the base of the renowned Los Cuernos (The Horns). Whatever you do in Patagonia, you are sure to remember the wild, untouched scenery for a lifetime.

Take an optional day trip out onto the straits to see penguins at play on their island homes. Why not celebrate the end of the journey with a delicious dinner? The seafood here in Punta Arenas is fresh and tasty.
