Atop a rocky promontory, the citadel of Cavaillon boasts magnificent views of the countryside soon to be traversed. Hike along quiet roads past the smallholdings and gardens that produce the vegetables Cavaillon is renowned for. Walk further uphill across fields and over wooded hills, to the quaint village of Fontaine de Vaucluse - famous for its natural spring.
Ascending the hills of the Vaucluse, witness the countryside become more rocky and dramatic and enjoy impressive views to the river valleys below. Walk to the 12th-century Senanque Abbey en route to the attractive old village of Gordes, magnificently sited on the escarpment and dominated by its medieval chateau.
Today's walk will delight the senses as it winds through meadows, woods and fields rich with the flora so characteristic of Provence - purple lavender, scarlet poppies and golden corn. The vibrant village of Roussillon is home to tall green conifers and medieval buildings of red ochre.
The trail passes the quarries from where the ochre building stone of Roussillon comes, then leads up towards the hills and the town of Apt, a gourmet's delight. With charming streets leading through the old city, past ancient fountains, private mansions and tiny tree-filled squares, Apt is a pleasant reward for a day's walk. Finish the adventure with a roundtrip hike to Saignon for unparalleled views and perhaps a final Provencal feast.
